Poets’ Gulf:Porto Venere, San Terenzo, Lerici, Tellaro. Poets’ Gulf is the name given to the Gulf of La Spezia which extends from Porto Venere to the beautiful fishing village of Tellaro and includes the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto. Lerici, the largest municipality on the Gulf, is part of the Montemarcello Natural Park and together with San Terenzo it is nestled in the picturesque natural bay known as the “Cove of Lerici”, home to some of the finest beaches on the Ligurian coast, with crystal clear waters and wonderfully fine sand. Heading towards Tellaro, a fishing village perched on the sea cliffs, once the haunt of many a pirate, you can reach other amazing coves, either on foot or by sea. At the other end of the Gulf lies the enchanting town of Porto Venere, the beauty of which gave birth to the legend that a temple dedicated to Venus Erycina was once erected on the site now occupied by the Romantic Church of St. Peter’s. Palmaria Island stands on the horizon, separated from the Medieval town of Porto Venere by a strait known as “Le Bocche” where visitors can unwind by bathing in the cool waters or walking along the coast. Porto Venere , Palmaria Island and Tino Island were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1997.
